Scorching the Garden 2022

June

We have been so busy since farmers’ market season started.  We have been able to get into the garden from time to time and here’s what we’ve done.

We were able to fill the first plot with about 90 or so plant.  Superhots and some milds.  Once we got going, it didn’t take long to get everything in.

Even though we had two full truckloads of woodchips delivered, we ended up having to borrow some from the other plot.  It ended up raining the day after the planting so everyone got a nice drink.

The second plot took a bit more time.  We put in about 80 plants and it looks like we have room for another 60 or more.  Because of that, we also have close to a ton and a half of compost ready to use.  We’ll keep it under cover and use it when we do our July dressing.

The chips we got had a few logs snuck into it that we found as we were spreading the pile.  This gives us an opportunity to experiment with huglkultre, where we build a mound out of big chunks of wood covered with green material, then covered with compost, then covered with mulch.

The idea is to create a slow-release nutrient bank for cultivated plants to grow on.  And look who came to visit and check on our progress-Sir Hops-a-Lot!  Thank you for your Toad Services!

We sorta ran out of ties while putting up the fence, and it turns out, a good stick does the trick.  Nothing wasted, eh?

It only takes a few days to set up the garden, once everything is ready to go.  We have to coordinate wood chips, compost, transporting the tools and cardboard.  We have to figure a way to store everything that we’re going to use in a place that we have access to, but isn’t in the way as we work…just gather the resources sometimes takes a week or so.  Then we have to find, not only a free day, but one that isn’t raining too much.

Its a lot of work, but its a lot of fun and better than any gym.  I cant lift weights for long, but i can haul buckets of compost and wheelbarrows full of wood chips from sun up to sundown.

Thank you for checking out these posts.  We wont be updating them much more because we are so busy with our food stand, but also, who even reads this?   If you do, DM Scorch Garden on FB and tell us you read this garden update (June 2022) and if its before the end of June 2022, we’ll send you a free bottle of sauce.  One bottle per shipping address.  Dont be a jerk about it and try to game a bunch of free bottles, we’re a small company.

Do you enjoy the burn?
